When it comes to foldable phones, Chinese brands tend to take the lead with their hardware upgrades and advanced features every year. Samsung seems to be taking its time in enhancing the feature-set of its displays. Users have long demanded improvements in screen crease visibility and recent reports suggest consumers might be happy with the company's current plans.
Samsung plans to reduce the screen crease for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in an attempt to keep up with competitors
Samsung seems to be ready to compete with the Chinese brands that are offering far greater value for foldable phones in terms of reduced screen crease visibility and brightness. As reported by The Elec, Samsung intends to use a thicker Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) for its Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldable screen, which could help eliminate the dents. The current Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with a 30-micron thick glass, and it could be the reason why the device has had so many complaints. Samsung possibly plans to go ahead with a 50 microns thick UTG for the Flip 6, drastically improving the display durability as well as achieving its goal of less visible screen crease.
Given that the foldable devices are relatively new and have many moving parts, greater durability would be a major improvement. Other than choosing a thicker UTG, Samsung plans to use the same water hinge for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 as the previous model. However, the company may use a new hinge mechanism and an upgraded UTG display for the Z Flip 7 or later version.
Another major plus is that the improved UTG structure could help make the display bezels thinner while refining the crease. Performance-wise, Samsung is likely to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, which will have a bigger battery than the current variant and an improved primary camera.
Samsung might have a lumbering pace with foldable phones, but Apple has a very laid-back approach when it comes to this new technology. Reports do bring to light Samsung's attempt to persuade Apple about the foldable display's durability, but the launch date is nowhere in sight. The reports further claimed that the two companies sealed a deal where Samsung would provide display parts for Apple's upcoming foldable device. Whether this stands true or not, we are hopeful that Samsung and Apple will match the Chinese companies in the world of foldable devices.
