Less than a month after the debut of Resident Evil Requiem, modder Talemann has released "RE9VR", a mod that introduces unofficial Virtual Reality support to CAPCOM's latest game. This forces the game into first-person mode (the regular game can be played in both first and third-person) and adds support for motion controls. According to the modder, RE9VR works with OpenVR and OpenXR-compatible headsets.
Here's the official overview:
- Play with your motion controllers in 6DOF
- Slice them with your Axe
- Bike section in first-person wherever possible
- Automatic removal of pitchlock in important places in order to reach some needed button prompts
- HMD Movement is possible but not officially supported yet -> no rotating transform (body) or button prompts yet.
- Customizable crosshair and show/hide outfit parts
RE9VR relies on praydog's REFramework, though you'll have to get the nightly version, and even then, there might be 2D UI rendering issues that can currently only be solved by restarting Resident Evil Requiem. Another requirement is the VigEm Bus Driver, which is used for bindings.
The modder also recommends changing the following in-game settings for an optimal experience:
CONTROLS:
Basic Settings:
Aim Assist -> OFF
Reset Scope Magnification -> OFF
Dot Sight Perspective -> OFF
Controller:
Control Type -> Default
Button Icon Type -> Type A
CAMERA:
Grace´s Camera -> First-Person (if you press ENTER here, you can set sensitivity. This also applies to this MOD)
Leon´s Camera -> First-Person (if you press ENTER here, you can set sensitivity. This also applies to this MOD)
Camera Wobble -> 0
GRAPHICS:
Screen Space Reflections -> OFF
Lens Distortion -> OFF
Depth of Field -> OFF
Upscaling Technology -> OFF
When it comes to RE9VR's options, they are found within REFramework's Script generated UI menu. First, you'll have to choose SteamVR or MetaVR for the controller; the default is MetaVR. The menu offers these settings:
- Crosshair Color (White / Red / Green ...) and Scale
- Enable Recoil (Default Off) <- this won't move the weapon, it's just the game's recoil.
- Enable CameraShake (Default Off)
- Enable HMD Movement (Default Off) - Yes, HMD Movement is there, but all button prompts will only show if the game camera is also facing it (via right stick). That's why it's off by default for now.
- Enable LeonHULK (the modder highly recommends not enabling it)
- Enable Body for Grace (Default is Off) <- this will show Grace's body instead of hands only. Flickering can appear, and the jacket will still be gone
- Enable Body for Leon (Default is Off) <- this will show Leon's body rather than just hands. Flickering can appear, and the jacket will still be gone
An add-on mod called RE9VR Immersion Enhancer was already released by modder CharlotteLiu, by the way. This adds a weapon holster system, quick healing, swipe to sharpen axe, grab to use flashlight, melee moves, pull pin to throw grenades, and bhaptics support.
As of last week, CAPCOM confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem is the fastest-selling game in the whole series, with over six million units sold in the first week on the market. The development team is already hard at work on a story expansion and a "surprise" (likely a Mercenaries-style mode) due in May.
