Google was earlier reported to introduce a price hike to the Pixel 8a, and our first impression was that it would significantly tarnish the mid-ranger’s prospects before it even arrived in various markets. However, according to the latest specifications leak, we have a better understanding of why it will be an expensive model, as it touts flagship-class hardware, all the while being positioned as the more affordable offering.

Pixel 8a will also closely match the Pixel 8’s design and get DisplayPort support right off the bat

A pleasant surprise greeted us when Android Authority’s Kamila Wojciechowska provided the impressive specifications of the Pixel 8a, starting with the Tensor G3. Historically, Google has always used its latest SoC in its next mid-ranged smartphone, so it was unsurprising for us to learn that this chipset would also be found in this device. However, the same silicon powering the more expensive Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro exhibits severe thermal throttling, so it will be interesting to see if Google has implemented some capable cooling solution to the Pixel 8a that will allow the Tensor G3 to function at its peak performance.

Next up, we have the 120Hz OLED panel, and it is the first time that Google is using a display on a non-flagship smartphone that supports this high of a refresh rate. The Pixel 7a supported up to 90Hz, so seeing that the Pixel 8a display can match the refresh rate of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro is refreshing. Additionally, this screen is said to sport a crisp resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, with brightness going up to 1,400nits. As a bonus, the Pixel 8a supports DisplayPort output, meaning that you can hook it up to a compatible monitor using a cable and enjoy Samsung’s DeX-like desktop functionality.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 8a will retain the same camera as the Pixel 7a, with the primary shooter being a 64MP Sony IMX787 unit. Hopefully, the Tensor G3 and Google’s computational imaging techniques bring significant improvements in this area. Google is also expanding to other markets, allowing it to ramp up higher shipments for the year. According to the report, the technology giant is said to bring the Pixel 8a to the following regions: Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

This specifications leak and additional details have us even more excited about the Pixel 8a. Though Google will reportedly charge customers a premium for these upgrades, it is still less than what other companies are pricing their high-end handsets.
