NVIDIA is releasing RTX Remix 1.5 today, which brings with it a range of new features, including support for new RTX IO compression.
NVIDIA Slashes Games Big Time With Its RTX IO Compression Tech, Now Featured In RTX Remix 1.5
This year, NVIDIA's RTX Remix suite is getting some major updates. We've already seen the addition of RTX Remix Logic with Dynamic FX and new Particle VFX. Today, NVIDIA releases RTX Remix 1.5, which is going to take things a step further.

With RTX Remix 1.5, NVIDIA will introduce a new packaging workflow along with more accessibility features and Remix tools that will help game modders to accelerate their modding workflows with AI-powered assistants. Some of these features include:
- Smooth Normals: A top-requested community feature is now available. It adds automatic smooth-normal generation for captured legacy geometry, making older assets look less blocky or faceted under path-traced lighting.
- RTX IO: RTX Remix 1.5 includes new RTX IO compression options in the packaging workflow, including split-size presets from 1GB to 16GB. RTX IO is our high-performance storage technology that speeds up game loading and reduces CPU overhead. Portal with RTX, Portal: Prelude RTX, and the Half-Life 2 RTX demo have officially integrated RTX IO. Thanks to this update, file sizes have dropped significantly: Portal with RTX has been reduced from 25 GB to 17 GB, while Half-Life 2 RTX has shrunk from 80 GB to 50 GB.
- Viewport Light Controls: RTX Remix 1.5 adds new and improved viewport light controls. Now, existing light manipulators are easier to manage through a unified viewport lights menu, with persistent toggles for manipulator visibility and intensity controls.
- RTX Remix Skills: We recently published several RTX Remix Skills, text-based instruction files that provide specific functional context to AI coding agents. These files include guides on creating feature branches, conducting unit tests, preparing merge requests, and much more. By making coding agents smarter, modders can accelerate the remastering process.
One of the main highlights of the new RTX Remix 1.5 release is the addition of a new RTX IO compression model, which slashes game sizes big time. RTX IO is NVIDIA's high-performance storage technology, which was introduced back in 2020, and not only helps deliver faster load times in games, but also eliminates stuttering encountered with storage bottlenecks or CPU overhead.

NVIDIA states that they have integrated the latest RTX IO model within Portal with RTX, Portal: Prelude RTX, and Half-Life 2 RTX demo. As such, these games have now reduced the total file size drastically. For example, Portal with RTX is down to 17 GB (25 GB originally), marking a 32% size reduction, and Half-Life 2 RTX is down to 50 GB (80 GB originally, marking a 37.5% size reduction. This not only frees up space for gamers, but modders can now pack in more assets, more detail, and more updates with the freed-up space.
In addition to that, the rest of the RTX Remix 1.5 upgrades, such as Smooth Normals, Viewport Light Controls, and RTX Remix Skills, will make the modding experience much better and refined, delivering gamers with a renewed experience in classic titles.
