Twenty Years Later, the ATI Acquisition Remains AMD's Most Important Milestone, Which Helped in Driving Innovation from Radeon Graphics to AI Accelerators
On July 24, 2006, AMD announced one of the biggest acquisitions in semiconductor history by acquiring ATI Technologies in a deal worth approximately $5.4 billion. At that time, it was seen as a big gamble that would put AMD directly against giants like Intel and NVIDIA. Exactly two decades later, it is clear that the acquisition fundamentally changed AMD's future for good.
Nearly 20 years ago, AMD was mostly known for its CPUs, but ATI was seen as one of the biggest GPU makers alongside NVIDIA. By acquiring ATI Technologies, AMD gained ownership of Radeon Graphics and also decades of GPU expertise. Despite ATI disappearing from the market in 2010, its technology became the backbone of every Radeon product that followed.
This acquisition also gave AMD the ability to combine the CPU and the GPU in ways that previously appeared impossible, and led to the launch of APUs (Accelerated Processing Unit), which combine both CPU and integrated graphics, eliminating the need for any discrete GPU solution. We all know how incredible AMD's journey has been since then, and to this day, AMD offers the best APUs in the industry, although Intel has now started delivering competitive products.
That said, the discrete GPU lineup from AMD remained a strong competitor to NVIDIA's offerings. Radeon graphics cards have been challenging NVIDIA's gaming GPUs for years, and even though NVIDIA still leads with a larger share, nothing has challenged NVIDIA like the Radeon Graphics. AMD still gained the lead in other segments, such as consoles, where AMD APUs remain the primary hardware for delivering amazing performance on a budget.

Be it PlayStation or Xbox, almost every popular handheld relied on AMD's semi-custom processors that combined the Zen CPU cores with Radeon graphics. Not just the gaming segment, but ATI's acquisition also gave AMD a huge boost in the AI segment. ATI acquisition helped AMD to build its Instinct accelerator lineup for high-performance computing and AI workloads. The Instinct family has become AMD's answer to NVIDIA's data center GPUs and has powered AI training and inference across cloud providers and enterprise servers.
Although NVIDIA still dominates the AI accelerator market, AMD has a sharp focus in this segment, which can be seen from its heavy investment in expanding its Instinct ecosystem. Looking back after 20 years, it is clear that AMD's acquisition of ATI was much more than a graphics business purchase.
