The Nintendo Switch seems to be leaving quite a bit of performance on the table at its vanilla clock speeds, judging from a new overclocking test video shared online.
The video, which was shared on YouTube by naga, highlights how the vast majority of open-world games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Witcher 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Assassin's Creed 3, and Hogwarts Legacy benefit from faster CPU and GPU clock speeds, all managing to run at around 60 FPS and with some graphics mods to boot. Even more linear games greatly benefit from faster CPU and GPU clock speeds, such as Dark Souls Remastered and Bayonetta 3, especially the latter, as the game's performance is all over the place on the base system.
Given its much better specs and NVIDIA DLSS support, the Nintendo Switch's successor likely won't have the same performance troubles for demanding games, such as open-world titles. And even if the system struggles to keep steady 60 FPS in certain titles, there's a good chance that players with VRR displays will still have a decent gaming experience, as the upcoming system may support 40 FPS modes, judging from some recent findings.
No matter what, it is undeniable that the Nintendo Switch left a lasting impact on the gaming industry as a whole, spearheading a new generation of gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally. While its successor is said to be a "conservative hardware evolution," it will likely have no trouble becoming as successful as its illustrious predecessor.
