Microsoft and Windows Insiders have been working on Windows 10 November 2021 Update for several months now. The next and final Windows 10 feature update has moved out of the active development process to the Release Preview Channel.

The company is expected to initiate the public release process sometime this month (perhaps even today...), which means it's that time of the year again when Windows 10 users have to decide whether to hop on to the new update, stick to their current older version, or do something else.

3 ways to handle the final Windows 10 feature update release

  1. Install version 21H2 (November 2021 Update) as soon as it's released.
  2. Stick to your current version.
  3. Install the last stable version of the OS, which currently is version 21H1 (the May 2021 Update), and wait for the new version to get stable for 3+ months.

If you can't wait to get your hands on the upcoming November 2021 Update, we have already shared how you can install the November 2021 Update before the public release. Otherwise, you can wait for the public release to happen to get the newest version of the operating system on your device.

Future proof your devices by installing Windows 10 v21H1 ahead of the next release

The most recommended option right now is to get your machines on Windows 10 May 2021 Update, aka version 21H1. Released in May, over the last several months, the company has serviced v21H1, making it the right time to get your devices upgraded to this version before the new one drops.

Once the new feature update is released, Microsoft will remove the option to download the previous version, which is why it is wise to at least download a copy of version 21H1 even if you don't want to make the upgrade right away.

If you are on an older version, you can either choose to upgrade to version 21H1 through Windows Update in the Settings app or do a clean installation using the ISO files (more details in this guide).

What's next

Once you are done installing the new version, head over to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates to install any available cumulative and security updates.

- Alternatively, upgrade to Windows 11 if your device meets the minimum system requirements
