Mortal Kombat 11 Devs Deny Pushing In-Game Purchases, Towers Nerfed, Currency Gift Coming
For the most part, Mortal Kombat 11 is another top-notch entry in NetherRealm’s long-running series, but the game isn’t without its issues. Specifically, the game’s new Kustomization system is a slog, as earning gear and skins requires you to play through punishingly-difficult Towers in order to earn currency to open chests, which are often packed with filler junk. A Reddit thread that made the rounds yesterday estimated it would take over 3000 hours to earn all of Mortal Kombat 11’s Kustomization items through normal play. Our Redditor also estimated buying all MK11’s skins in the game’s real-money store would cost $6440, a point Ed Boon himself responded to in, uh, colorful fashion.

Okay, so NetherRealm isn’t asking anybody to spend 6000k on their game, but Boon doesn’t have anything to say about the 3000 hours it would take to earn stuff the old-fashioned way, presumably because that calculation was correct. Thankfully, it seems NetherRealm realizes some tweaks need to be made, as NetherRealm Studios community manager Tyler Lansdown and senior system designer Derek Kirtzic recently took to Twitch to discuss upcoming changes. For his part, Lansdown denied Mortal Kombat 11 was designed to push microtransactions, saying NetherRealm doesn’t work that way…
“At launch, the difficulty of Towers of Time was too high. 100 percent. People felt it was unfair. Unfortunately, that made the process of earning rewards in The Krypt seem punishingly slow. This game was never designed to encourage in-game purchases. NetherRealm does not make games that way, and we never have made games that way. We do not artificially drive people towards in-game purchases.”
NetherRealm has already pushed out a server-side update, which dials down the difficulty of the game’s Towers of Time by reducing boss health and the frequency of certain punishing modifiers. This update doesn’t require a download, although a traditional patch is also in the works that will increase currency rewards and tweak other gameplay elements. That update will possibly arrive this week, or, at the latest, early next week. NetherRealm are also promising to smooth over some of the launch issues with a free currency pack (500k Coins, 500 Hearts, 1000 Souls, and 1000 Time Crystals) for all players, although they haven’t specified when the pack will arrive.
As I mentioned in my full review, Mortal Kombat 11’s grindy elements can largely be sidestepped, as the game contains tons of traditional single-player and multiplayer content, but it’s good to see NetherRealm trying to address player complaints. Whether they go far enough to make the Kustomization system actually palatable, remains to be seen. One tweak I'd love to see, is being able to see which fighter the gear in each Krypt chest is for. I don't have any desire to grab every item in MK11, I'd rather collect stuff specifically for one or two favorite fighters.
