Research firm Canalys has published a report about the smartphone market in Q4 2023. The report shows a breakdown by processor vendor, and based on the information found inside it, MediaTek led the charge as it powered more devices than any chip maker in the final quarter of 2023. This marks an impressive 21% year-over-year increment.

MediaTek and Apple lead the market, while Samsung finds itself in deep trouble

The report shows a lot of other interesting information, such as Apple taking the most money home in Q4 2023. iPhones managed to rake in an impressive $87 billion in revenue, which is a 20% increase from the same time last year. Apple was followed by Qualcomm, but despite being on the second number, the actual numbers don't do nearly enough justice.

It is worth noting that the report shared by Canalys only includes data from October to December. It does not have any details as far as the entire fiscal year is concerned. MediaTek, Apple, and Qualcomm were among the top three chipmakers across the market. What's even more surprising is that Huawei's HiSilicon also saw $7 billion in revenue for 7 million units. This primarily comes from the Huawei phones that are still on sale in the domestic market.

Aside from MediaTek, another Chinese company, Unisoc, surprised us all as the company witnessed a 24% YoY increase in revenue and volume.

While MediaTek seems to have won big, the same cannot be said about Samsung, as the company's Semiconductor division saw a 48% decrease in shipments of all the devices with Exynos chipsets. This brought the revenue down to $5 billion, a massive 44% drop from last year. There could be some increase this year thanks to the Exynos-powered Galaxy S24 devices. Not to mention, the new Galaxy A series of devices is due to launch in a couple of days.

Honestly, it does not really surprise me that MediaTek has taken the lead. The company has been giving us some robust chipsets that are really good in both the mid-range and flagship categories. It is nice to see that the company has managed to live up to this well. At the same time, Samsung seems to have found itself in a troubled situation, and I am really hoping that the company manages to bounce back from what it is going through.
