The last time LG was selling its UltraFine monitors, these displays carried a less than stellar design and were only limited to the 5K resolution. At CES 2025, the Korean manufacturer has turned things up a notch by showcasing its UltraFine 6K monitor, which is the first to support the Thunderbolt 5 standard, making it ideal for several Mac models featuring the new M4. Additionally, the specifications of the UltraFine 6K monitor reveal that it is a ‘must have’ for creative professionals as it touts up to 99.5 percent of the color gamut. As for the extra details, let us dive into those.
Most of the technical details surrounding the LG UltraFine 6K are shrouded in mystery, but its design change makes the display more akin to Apple’s Pro Display XDR
During the CES 2025 trade, LG detailed that the UltraFine 6K monitor features the model number 32U990A, indicating that it has a 32-inch panel. As for the information posted below, we learn that the monitor occupies 99.5 percent of the Adobe RGB color space and 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. In short, the panel is tailor-made for content creators and professionals who do not want to go through the trouble of calibrating the UltraFine 6K over and over again.
“LG’s latest UltraFine (model 32U990A) monitor is the world's first 6K high-resolution monitor to come with Thunderbolt™ 5 and its versatile connectivity. Featuring a Nano IPS Black panel, it delivers exceptional color accuracy and a high contrast with a wide color gamut covering 99.5% of Adobe RGB and 98% of DCI-P3. With calibration software support, this monitor is perfect for media professionals, while its slim, geometric design enhances both aesthetics and user convenience to satisfy every kind of user.”
Instead of mini-LED or OLED, LG has opted for ‘Nano IPS Black’ technology, and while some might be disgruntled upon hearing this, LG has likely resorted to this variant to keep the price low. Thankfully, one of the redeeming features of the UltraFine 6K is support for Thunderbolt 5, a standard that can deliver 80Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth, with the possibility of that figure reaching up to 120Gbps thanks to Bandwidth Boost. We have reason to believe that the UltraFine 6K should be able to push the 6K resolution at a refresh rate of 120Hz, but those details remain elusive for now.
If you plan on getting the LG UltraFine 6K for your daily use, you might want to invest in either an M4 Mac mini or an M4 MacBook Pro. Luckily for you, the base model of the M4 Mac mini, which features 16GB unified RAM and a 256GB SSD, is going for $579.99 on Amazon, while the 512GB storage version is listed for $749 after a $50 discount. As for the M4 MacBook Pro, the 14.2-inch model with 16GB of unified RAM and a 512GB SSD can be yours for $1,487, thanks to a $112 price cut.
