Apple’s ambitious drive in developing a crease-free version of the iPhone Fold means that there will be a myriad of technical challenges that need to be overcome before the device undergoes mass production. Like Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold, where each unit is individually inspected, the technology giant may have to adhere to the same practice, and that means the iPhone Fold will be available in limited supply. The silver lining in all of this is that customers anticipating its launch will not have to spend as much as previously expected.
Targeted price of the iPhone Fold said to be under $2,000, making it the same price as the 2TB version of the iPhone 17 Pro Max
A rumor posted on yeux1122’s blog mentions the initial scarce supply of the iPhone Fold, though the number of units has not been mentioned. Naturally, Apple is probably testing the device rigorously, meaning that the Cupertino firm’s elaborate supply chain has likely not begun supplying or procuring the necessary parts to initiate the assembly process. Given the complex design that may eventually lead to removing Face ID in favor of a side-mounted Touch ID sensor to make the device thinner, Apple will have its hands full in perfecting various aspects of the iPhone Fold.
These reasons are why the device is said to be in limited supply, but thankfully, the targeted price is rumored to be lowered. Previously, we reported that consumers would have to pay an MSRP of $2,399 for the iPhone Fold. Now, the new figure is said to be under $1,999, making it equivalent to the 2TB version of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. We cannot confirm whether Apple will lose money on each iPhone Fold unit sold, but assuming that this is the case, these losses can be offset by the increased demand for the iPhone 18 series.
For 2026, Apple has been reported to adopt an entirely different launch strategy where the base iPhone 18 will arrive in H1 2027 and is reported to be called the iPhone 20. Although there is no confirmation from the company, this approach could be taken to maximize visibility for the iPhone Fold, potentially leading to increased sales.
