Apple isn’t expected to pull any punches with the iPhone Fold price, as the technology giant’s first device bearing this form factor is estimated to retail for $2,399, making it only slightly cheaper than Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold. With this amount, potential buyers will expect nothing more than the ‘top of the line’ specifications, but according to one tipster, the iPhone Fold’s prototype is rumored to lack Face ID to obtain a thinner design. Fortunately, Apple is said to do away with the notch or any pill-shaped cutout for the device, switching to a punch-hole and under-display unit.
Instead of Face ID, the iPhone Fold could rely on a side-mounted Touch ID sensor for authentication purposes
The specifications of the iPhone Fold prototype have been shared by Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, who previously shared similar details at the start of the year. On this occasion, some of the details have been altered, with the latest post mentioning a smaller 7.58-inch inner display and a 5.25-inch cover screen. However, the lack of Face ID remains a consistent aspect of the iPhone Fold, with TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously stating that TrueDepth camera components will be missing from the configuration due to design complications.
Given that the iPhone Fold will reportedly feature a vapor chamber, its thickness was already reaching the limit of Apple’s comfort zone, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stating that the device will resemble two iPhone Air units placed side-by-side. Naturally, some compromises were necessary, but we can imagine that the lack of Face ID in favor of a side-mounted Touch ID will rub readers the wrong way. After all, a side-mounted Touch ID sensor is found in Apple’s iPad Air lineup, and it doesn’t belong in the flagship tier.

Other specifications include one in-screen camera, one punch-hole unit, and a 48MP dual-sensor configuration. As for the hinge, it is expected to be Apple’s most challenging part of the entire product, along with achieving a crease-free design. Digital Chat Station mentions that the hinge will be a robust piece of the puzzle, with Apple resorting to employing liquid metal and a durable amorphous metal glass composite to improve durability. We also learn that Samsung is exploring a foldable smartphone with dimensions similar to the iPhone Fold, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
