Apple is preparing to launch its first foldable iPhone and it is shaping up to be the most daring device the company has ever made. Expected to arrive in 2026, the foldable iPhone will feature a design inspired by the recently launched iPhone Air, built with a titanium frame for enhanced durability, and a price sitting well above $2,000. It will be Apple’s thinnest and most expensive iPhone yet, a product aimed at showing what the future of the iPhone could look like.
Apple's foldable iPhone will arrive in 2026, featuring an ultra-thin titanium design and a price over $2,000
Gurman states in his latest Power On newsletter that the design of the foldable iPhone is said to resemble two ultra-thin iPhone Air models placed side by side, folding together into a device that looks and feels like a regular iPhone when closed. When unfolded, it will expand into a larger display, transforming it into an elegant, sleek, and instantly familiar device for Apple fans. Apple’s first-generation foldable will start from where the foldable smartphone market is right now in terms of design, which means that the first iPhone Fold will not be clunky or hefty device, similar to the original Galaxy Fold.
As for how the foldable iPhone will look, I am increasingly told that users should imagine two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side. In other words, it’s going to be super thin and a design achievement.
Mark Gurman shared that early estimates suggest that it will cost at least $2,000, with some prior reports claiming that the price tag would rest between $2,100 and $2,300, making it by far the most expensive iPhone ever released. Rather than aiming for mass adoption, the first-generation iPhone Fold will serve as a showcase for Apple’s design and engineering at the very highest level. Ultimately, the company will test the industry response with the first-generation model, kind of like what it did with the Vision Pro, and then build upon it.
Gurman also claims that the company plans to concentrate foldable iPhone production in China, where Apple already has the most experience handling complex devices. Despite the company’s efforts to diversify its supply chain, products that require the most expertise are likely to stay in the hands of the established partners with the required technological advancements. It was previously rumored that the company would be looking to shift production to India, but it remains to be seen which devices would be part of the company’s plans.
The launch timing is currently set for fall 2026, which means that it will arrive alongside the iPhone 18 lineup. However, since it is a new product, we can expect delays into October or November, considering how seriously the company tends to take its major redesigns or new products. In the end, the foldable iPhone will not just be another addition to the lineup, but a representation of Apple’s attempts to redefine the category altogether and prove the foldable can be more than just a novelty.
