iPhone 16 Pro Storage could cause slower performance

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models will bring many changes and upgraded features. The company is working to upgrade the design and form factor of the iPhone 16 Pro models to accommodate a bigger camera sensor. It is now being reported that the 1TB storage variant of the iPhone 16 Pro could feature slower performance compared to its lower-tiered variants. A new report from DigiTimes claims that the company is willing to compromise on its performance to save costs.

Apple to opt for QLC NAND storage instead of TLC for the iPhone 16 Pro, but it will take a hit on the performance

Apple's A-series of chips deliver enhanced performance on the iPhone. However, the storage can constrain performance if the read and write speeds are slower. Apple was recently rumored to switch to higher-density Quad-Level Cell or QLC NAND flash memory for the 1TB variant of the iPhone 16 Pro. While the company is still "actively evaluating" its decision to use a QLC Cell, the current TLC Cells or Triple-Level Cell NANA storage features faster read and write speeds for the 1TB variant.

If the company does decide to go ahead with its decision, it would be wise to stick to the 512GB variant if you want the iPhone 16 Pro to deliver maximum performance. However, several benefits are associated with QLC NAND storage on the iPhone. For instance, the company plans to reduce the internal space that the storage takes, which is only possible with the QLC NAND storage compared to the TLC NAND storage. Additionally, the company can offer up to 2TB of storage capacity, another significant addition.

Note that opting for a QLC NAND would also impact the durability and reliability of the storage, as TLC can handle constant read and write operations more effectively. Nonetheless, the company could optimize the entire experience. Currently, the 1TB version of the iPhone 15 Pro is priced at $1,599, which is $200 more than the 512GB model. Since the QLC NAND storage is cheaper than TLC, the 2TB variant would have to be cost-effective.

With the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple plans to create internal space for the upgraded camera sensors. For the same reason, the company plans to introduce a slightly larger design for the iPhone 16 Pro model. The internal storage switch could also have something to do with the device's interior space. Note that the iPhone 16 Pro launch is months away, and the company could always adopt an alternative way to mitigate the performance constraints.
