Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have previously been reported to support the Thunderbolt 3 standard, as both flagships will ship with a USB-C port instead of Lightning. A new rumor now alleges that Thunderbolt 4 features will also be added in the future.
Apple will unlock Thunderbolt 4 features after officially releasing iOS 17, but past iPhone models will not get them
Sadly, non-Pro versions of the iPhone 15 will not support Thunderbolt 3 and will likely stick with the USB 3.0 standard. According to @analyst941, the tipster hints that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also gain Thunderbolt 4 features, but these will not be available during their official launch. Instead, Apple is rumored to bring these ‘temporarily locked’ additions when it releases iOS 17, which should happen sometime after the announcement of the aforementioned flagships.
The tipster mentions an example of the advantages of Thunderbolt 4, talking about a ‘new cinematography’ feature. Apparently, your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max will be able to connect to a Thunderbolt-compatible monitor with up to a 4K video output and provide live feedback while the handsets are recording footage. The aspect ratio of the video feed will be 16:9, and though this feature can be handy in some situations, we feel it will target a niche audience, possibly short film directors or content creators that do not want to lug around those massive cameras with external displays.

Of course, with the release of iOS 17, do not expect older iPhone models with Lightning interfaces to magically get Thunderbolt 4 support, as those with USB-C ports will only have the privilege. Other benefits of Thunderbolt 3 on an iPhone will be ridiculously fast data transfers. At present, the maximum theoretical bandwidth of Thunderbolt 3 is 40Gb/s or 5,000MB/s. However, we doubt iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max owners will see such speeds because of various factors, such as where that data is being transferred to or where it is being picked from.
We should see Apple introduce more features in the future now that Thunderbolt 3 support is arriving to upcoming iPhones. Perhaps in the future, the company believes that high bandwidth support should also arrive for the non-Pro models, but that is a talk for another day.
