iOS 26 Clean Up tool has improved substantially
Remember iOS 26's Clean Up and the mess it made? That's no longer a problem in iOS 27

One feature belonging to iOS 26 that was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons was Clean Up, with the results transforming into a garbled, distorted mess that made people wonder when Apple was going to fix it. After a work in progress 12 months later, iOS 27 has finally addressed this problem, with the same tool now performing almost on par with Samsung’s Galaxy AI.

To get the best result, iOS 27’s Clean Up needs to utilize Apple’s cloud-based AI models

A few examples have been shared below showing the improvement jump that the Clean Up tool has made in iOS 27. A notable upgrade is that a person’s face that used to look like it took a dip in boiling hot oil is no longer persistent in the newest version of Clean Up, with the final result showing a more uniform image. The biggest hurdle in iOS 26 was that it used to try to fill out the missing details in human faces, but missed that goal by miles.

Thankfully, that’s no longer a hurdle. A useful tip provided by Alvin on X is that to get the best result when using iOS 27, users should opt for Apple’s cloud-based AI models instead of on-device ones. That’s not to say that the on-device versions will produce horrendous results, as tested by Brian MacDuff, but the image shared below only shows the cloud-based image.

Thanks to leveraging Gemini when using iOS 27’s Clean Up tool, the service has received a substantial upgrade, but there are still those criticizing Apple for being unable to deliver the same quality as its on-device AI models. To remind you, even Samsung’s Galaxy AI takes advantage of Gemini, so it isn’t surprising Apple has switched to a superior alternative.

It’s unclear when Apple’s own AI models can produce similar results to Gemini, but it’s refreshing to see that after just 12 months of being incessantly criticized for being behind in this area, the Cupertino giant has finally covered a ton of ground with a major improvement in iOS 27.
