During our recent GDC 2026 interview with NC America CEO Jeonghee “JJ” Jin, we couldn't pass up on the opportunity to inquire about the state of Horizon Steel Frontiers, the MMORPG set in the post-apocalyptic franchise created by Guerrilla Games.

The first rumor about this project emerged in late 2022, when the Korean website MTN reported that Sony and NCSoft had signed a deal allowing NCSoft to develop an MMO game based on Horizon. All that appeared to be in jeopardy in early 2025, when the same source claimed the project had been canceled following an internal review, but that turned out to be false. Horizon Steel Frontiers is very much real, as revealed in November 2025 with an extensive showcase.

With the project now official and seemingly well-received at first, we asked Jeonghee Jin for an update and whether she would comment on the likelihood of a PlayStation 5 port (the game is currently confirmed only for PC and mobile). The executive revealed that Horizon Steel Frontiers is being developed in close collaboration with original IP creator Guerrilla, and so far, it's looking really good:

Development is going very well. The team is working closely with Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the game is looking genuinely amazing: a beautiful, stunning world where humanity, nature, and technology all collide. The developers have built something that I think will be a great MMO experience.

As for platforms beyond what's already been announced, the game was announced as a mobile and PC cross-play title, and that's all I can confirm right now. Who knows, there may be more to come. I know the PS5 question came up at G-Star, and the developer's response there was essentially "that would be really cool, we'd need to talk to Sony." The original scope was mobile and PC cross-play, but I absolutely think there's a possibility of more. I'll leave it at that.

Horizon Steel Frontiers is set in a vast region called the Deadlands, loosely inspired by the southern US states of Arizona and New Mexico. As you'd expect in an MMO, players won't assume the role of Aloy like in the single player games. Instead, they will create their own machine hunters.

Confirmed features include:

Horizon Steel Frontiers has no publicly announced release date yet, but we might learn more about testing phases later in 2026.
