Google Street View captures mundane moments to help users virtually go through places and streets with the help of a panoramic 360-degree view of different locations around the world. Recently, a similar seemingly routine image was captured of a man loading a white bag in the trunk of a car, stirring curiosity about what is happening in the scene. The apparently harmless images turned out to be linked to criminal activity and eventually led to an arrest.
Google Street View captures a seemingly mundane routine image that later served as evidence of criminal activity
Google Street View comes in handy in situations where users want to explore Google Maps or Google Earth to find out about a location or even a street. However, it seems like there is more to the feature than mere navigation, as in an unexpected turn of events, a picture that was captured by Google Street View was the way to a criminal investigation. The authorities in Spain said that the picture helped them with solving the case of a man who disappeared last year.
According to a news release, the officers were able to find two individuals, a woman and a man, who were involved in the disappearance of a man. The woman was said to be the missing person's partner, and the man involved was also said to be the woman's partner. While the two suspects were linked together, they were both arrested from different locations in Soria last month. After the arrest, human remains were discovered by the investigators that are believed to be of the missing man.
While the police refrained from sharing details of the suspect or the victim to protect the privacy of those involved, they did suggest that Google Maps images helped them with the investigation.
Among the clues that the investigators had to solve the crime, though they were not necessarily the decisive ones, were some images that they detected during the investigations.
A relative reported the missing person in November last year, and the police have been in contact since then. Investigators began looking into the case and eventually arrested the two people involved. In the images obtained by Google, a man is seen behind a red car, holding a white bag that is approximately the size of a human body. This is not the first time Google Maps and its advanced features have helped solve a crime and highlight the power such technological advancements have in helping with a complicated case.
