NEXON has announced Embers of the Uncrowned, an isometric dark fantasy MMORPG for PC with tactical combat and a no-P2W promise.

South Korean-Japanese developer NEXON has announced a new PC game called Embers of the Uncrowned. It's an isometric dark fantasy MMORPG developed by a team of self-described "hardcore MMORPG veterans" with a deep passion for the genre, set on a continent ravaged by an elven invasion. In the game, players take the role of the illegitimate heir to House Harborwell. They're a mercenary called back by destiny to reclaim their lost domain and restore their noble house.

The players' character growth is directly tied to their House's growth. Constructing buildings in the settlement produces essential items for the journey, while upgrading the House Legacy and Bloodline unlocks the player character's full potential. The developers' long-term vision is to create an expansive living world where players can freely interact.

At launch, Embers of the Uncrowned features fast-paced isometric combat with three distinct classes:

  • Spectral Blade — a swift swordswoman who carves through enemies with a longsword
  • Executioner — a brutish powerhouse who crushes foes with a giant axe
  • Stormbringer — a mage who wields wind and lightning magic

Each class comes with its own skill trees, allowing for diverse build experimentation. Players also recruit loyal companions who fight alongside them and can be synergized with for greater effect.

According to the developers, combat goes well beyond button-mashing, emphasizing precise player control and strategic decision-making. Key mechanics include Spell Interruption, which can break devastating boss skills at the right moment; a Stagger System, which creates a limited window to unleash massive burst damage on your foe; and SP-based Evasion, which lets players dodge lethal attacks using a finite resource, making positioning skill-based.

Against the most powerful enemies, cooperation with other players becomes essential, with Domain Bosses (open-field) and Raids rewarding victorious parties with rare loot. The latter activity type will particularly test player groups.

NEXON's development team has made an explicit pledge: Embers of the Uncrowned will not include any Pay-to-Win items that directly affect character growth. All gear, progression elements, and essential consumables will be obtainable purely through gameplay. The studio did disclose that AI-based tools may be utilized to support in-game visual content creation, marketing materials, live chat translation features, and partial in-game dialogue and script localization.

Embers of the Uncrowned will be available for testing during the upcoming Steam Next Fest in June. The minimum and recommended system requirements are already avaialble from the Steam page, so we've added them below.
