The iPhone 16 Pro OLED’s mass production has been reported on multiple occasions to be handled by Samsung and LG, as both suppliers have proven time and time again that they can provide high-quality LTPO screens to Apple in larger volumes. According to the latest report, both Korean firms have received approval to start the mass manufacturing of the panel, and once again, Chinese display maker BOE has missed out on this opportunity, though its responsibilities lie elsewhere.
iPhone 16 Pro Max OLED approval is yet to be given, but Samsung and LG said to be waiting patiently
Given that Samsung is a bigger entity than LG in terms of manufacturing resources, The Elec reports that the Korean giant will be responsible for supplying Apple with OLEDs for all the iPhone 16 models. As for LG, it will only mass produce LTPO screens for the more expensive ‘Pro’ versions, with BOE fulfilling the responsibility of developing LTPS displays for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. At this time, Samsung and LG have yet to receive the green light on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, as Apple might be further evaluating the display samples.
As for why it could be taking so long to receive approval, Apple is reported to employ ‘Border Reduction Structure’ technology to its latest models, which will result in slimmer display bezels than the iPhone 15 series. Naturally, this is a difficult feat, even for companies like Samsung and LG who have garnered years of production expertise under their belts. As for the approval process, the report states that Samsung is scheduled to proceed at the end of the month and is expected to pass the test with ease.
Conversely, LG will reportedly receive mass production approval in the middle of next month. The company received approval for the iPhone 16 Pro OLED on schedule, just like Samsung, suggesting that LG is darn serious about accumulating additional orders for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Unfortunately, despite its success, Samsung will likely take the lion’s share of the entire OLED shipment, but that does not mean there can be some competition in this space, which will give Apple additional leverage over pricing.
