Apple’s Siri And VoiceOver Technology Is Greatly Transforming The Lives of Blind People
The Wall Street Journal has detailed how artificial intelligence along with other advanced technology is shaping the lives of blind people. The smartphone is heavily contributing to the provision of this AI technology to the masses. Microsoft's Seeing AI app is a perfect example in this regard. Apart from this, Apple's ecosystem is another such example which is transforming the lives of blind people. Siri and VoiceOver play an important role. So let's dive in to see some more details on the matter.
Apple's Siri And VoiceOver Are Contributing In Transforming Lives Of Blind People
Blind people make heavy use of Apple's Siri and VoiceOver in their daily lives to carry out tasks such as sending text messages and controlling smart devices in their homes.
As much as blind people need specialized technology, building accessibility into mainstream products may be an even bigger need, say advocates such as Mark Riccobono, president of the National Federation of the Blind.
He points to the iPhone, which had accessibility built into it from the beginning.
“I can go down to the Apple store and pay the same price and triple-click the home button and I have VoiceOver,” says Mr. Riccobono, referring to a feature where the phone will describe aloud what is happening on the screen. “That’s built in, it’s great, it doesn’t cost a penny extra.”
For blind people, the driverless cars is another mean through which the blind will be assisted and will transform their lives in terms of traveling needs. Not just the blind but people with other disabilities will also take advantage of the technology.
In a white paper last year, the Ruderman Family Foundation, which advocates for the inclusion of people with disabilities in society, claimed self-driving vehicles “would enable new employment opportunities for approximately two million individuals with disabilities, and save $19 billion annually in health-care expenditures from missed medical appointments.”
We are not clearly sure whether Apple is working on driverless cars or not but we do believe that the company is working on the technology involved in the operation. There will be more to the story, so be sure to stay tuned in for more details.
