The wearable segment has expanded its position in the tech product market over the last few years. According to recent data, demand for wearable devices has surged in the last year, with global shipments increasing significantly. Although Apple Watch and AirPods shipments have decreased year on, this does not threaten Apple's position as the top wearable product supplier.
Apple's position as the market leader in the wearable sector is still intact despite some major blows
International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed data showing that worldwide shipments of wearables expanded swiftly overall, marking approximately 8.8 percent YoY growth. In the first quarter of 2024, the total shipments were 113.1 million units. While we see the demand for wearables is on the rise, on the other hand, we see a major decline in the Average Selling Prices (ASPs) for the segment, which has been dropping low continuously for the past five years and now has fallen to 11 percent in Q124.
Although the market is gaining attention with many new entrants investing due to the favorable business environment, consumers have become price-sensitive amidst poor economic conditions, leading to reduced selling prices.
Apple's position remains undefeated, as it rules the market for wearables by scoring the top position, with Xiaomi coming second and Huawei taking the third rank. The status as the number one brand in the segment was not tarnished by the substantial decrease in shipments of the AirPods and Apple Watch. Apple took the lead with 20.6 million shipments in the year's first quarter. Even though Apple's market share dropped 6.3 percent from 2023 to 2024, the competition stood nowhere close.
The Cupertino giant blamed the current economic crisis for the lower shipments, but IDC expressed how a temporary ban on the Apple Watch and a lack of new Airpods could also be contributing to the downfall.
It also mentioned how the snail-paced innovation in the tech market paves the way for companies with lower pricing to gain more users, as consumers are more inclined towards mid-range devices. Unless we see some major innovation, the tier-two companies could eventually take greater hold of the industry. If this trend continues, Apple might not be able to retain its title as the top wearable brand for long.
