Apple COO Jeff Williams to step down from his role later this month

The 15-year career of Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams will end later this month as the executive will step down from his position. According to the company’s latest announcement, Sabih Khan will be his direct successor and in the future, Apple’s design team will no longer report to Jeff, but will have a direct communication line with Chief Executive Officer, Tim Cook.

Jeff Williams will continue to oversee Apple’s design team until his retirement later in the year

In the press release, Apple’s Sabih Khan is currently the technology giant’s Senior Vice President of Operations, and it has been in the pipeline for a while for him to succeed Jeff. Cook states that Sabih is a brilliant strategist and has been one of the central architects of the company’s supply chain. He helped pioneer new technologies in advanced manufacturing, including the expansion of Apple’s manufacturing footprint in the U.S. Sabih has been at Apple for 30 years, with his efforts finally paying off as he will take a seat belonging to the firm’s head honchos.

As for Jeff, Cook writes that Apple would not be the same without him as he helped create one of the most respected supply chains in the world, while also being one of the key minds that helped made the Apple Watch what it is today. With the company’s COO departing, the design team will directly report to Cook, but until his retirement later this year, Jeff will continue to oversee this talented team.

“Jeff and I have worked alongside each other for as long as I can remember, and Apple wouldn’t be what it is without him. He’s helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world; launched Apple Watch and overseen its development; architected Apple’s health strategy; and led our world-class team of designers with great wisdom, heart, and dedication. I am and will always be beyond grateful for his numerous contributions to Apple over the years and his loyal friendship. Jeff’s true legacy can be seen in the amazing team he’s created and, while he’ll be greatly missed, he leaves the work of the future in incredible hands.”

Aside from his role in materializing the Apple Watch, Jeff also led the company’s health strategy, which helped customers live healthier lives. He also had a pivotal role in the introduction of iPod and iPhone programs. Needless to say, Sabih Khan definitely has big shoes to fill.
