Amazon does have something Lord of the Rings related in the works, but it's definitely not an MMO, a new report reveals.

Last year, when Amazon made massive cuts to its gaming division, one of the losses was the Lord of the Rings MMO that had been cancelled, rebooted, and then ultimately cancelled again. Now, a new report from Eurogamer that digs into one of the previously unknown projects that also got cancelled also revealed some insight into Amazon's plans for future Lord of the Rings games, which is that there's still something coming, just not an MMO.

Though the report mainly centers on a game called Project Trident, which was made in part by leaning heavily on Generative AI (GenAI) tools, sources Eurogamer spoke to also commented a bit on the status of what happened with the Lord of the Rings MMO, which is that it is definitely cancelled.

However, Amazon's head of gaming, Jeff Gattis, confirmed in a comment to the outlet on the report, "Our creative team continues to explore a compelling new game experience that does justice to Tolkien's world; we are working closely with Middle-earth and remain excited about the IP."

So we know that Amazon is exploring something, but we don't know what that exactly means yet, of course. As for upcoming games set within the popular fantasy franchise that we know about, the list is currently limited to games that haven't had proper announcements, but do have credible reports indicating they are coming.

Like how a Return to Moria sequel was practically confirmed last year via the LinkedIn account of a former developer at Free Range Games. Or more recent reports about a Lord of the Rings title potentially in the works at both Warhorse Studios and Crystal Dynamics. Regarding Amazon specifically, it wouldn't be surprising if the game Gattis is referring to is also the one that Crystal Dynamics is rumored to be working on.

Hopefully, we'll have some more official information to go on soon.
