The PC industry hasn't been in its best state recently, as AI and shortages have made it difficult for PC vendors to sustain consumer interest. In the midst of this, a report by SemiAccurate says that Team Green is looking for a rather "bold" move in the PC market, as it is disclosed that the company is looking to make a "huge purchase" for the PC/server market, implying that they might be eying an OEM/ODM acqusition. The SemiAccurate report, shared by Jukan, claims that talks have been ongoing for a year and are now approaching finalization.
Nvidia has been in negotiations for over a year to buy a large company and it will reshape the PC landscape. SemiAccurate has been following this story since late 2024 and the time is approaching to make a deal or walk.

Well, it is important to take this rumor with a grain of salt for now, since the report doesn't delve much into the specifics, nor does it cover NVIDIA's intentions behind a potential OEM acquisition. However, this is what we are here for. Based on the broader trend, NVIDIA is preparing for a massive release into the PC industry, in the form of laptop chips, which we have covered extensively in the past. Jensen's personal target is to reach a market that could deploy the company's laptop chips in up to "150 million" devices, suggesting NVIDIA is preparing to gain broader market share.
With an OEM acquisition, NVIDIA could take a more targeted approach to what it brings to market, in the form of specific models, and fine-tune them in terms of power or even performance. This would essentially place NVIDIA not just as a compute manufacturer but also as a direct PC vendor, in line with Jensen's aim of capturing the broader PC industry. However, the main problem with this rumor is that the potential acquisition spend on a large OEM/ODM doesn't justify at all, even if the goal is to make their laptop chips more widespread among gamers.

NVIDIA has managed to hold over 90% of the GPU market share in recent times, which is an indirect indication that the firm has worked closely with supply chain partners over the years. The company's most direct vendors include MSI, ASUS, and Gigabyte, specifically in the GPU market, while Dell and HP have focused more on a broader market strategy. Even if an acquisition is being considered, Team Green would likely eye Taiwanese OEMs like MSI, given their decades of cooperation.
For now, this is just a rumor, and we are waiting for more information. However, it would be interesting to see how the PC landscape evolves this year, especially since NVIDIA seems much more committed.
