iOS 18 firmware recovery for iPhone 16

Apple has been working on a wireless recovery and restore system for its devices for the past few years. It was initiated with Apple Watch, which came with iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5, and later extended to Apple TV with iOS 17 and tvOS 17. Apple has recently released iOS 18, which is packed with some promising features and capabilities, among which restoring firmware wirelessly for the iPhone 16 series has been made possible.

Apple has been vigorously working to improve device management and reduce dependency on physical connectivity across its ecosystem. Initially, the wireless recovery and restore system was seen for Apple TV and Apple Watch, but that is now being changed with iOS 18, which incorporated the wireless firmware and recovery system for the iPhone 16 lineup as well, allowing for a more seamless process.

As reported by 9to5Mac, the iOS 18 firmware leverages the same RecoveryOS that has been used to restore Apple TV and Apple Watch for the new iPhone 16 models, allowing for firmware recovery directly from the iPhone without needing any physical connections.

With the recently included Recovery Mode system in iOS 18 for the iPhone 16 series, users can simply resolve any problems with firmware by connecting to either another iPhone or an iPad, and the second device will be able to pick up the mode and initiate the recovery process. The device used for assistance would then download the new firmware iOS update and have it wirelessly transferred to the affected iPhone.

While any device with iOS 18 might be able to restore a bricked iPhone, for now, it is only reserved for the iPhone 16 series. This is because the new models are packed with a special recovery partition that aids in the recovery process and is independent of the main iOS system. This division reduces the dependency on the main iOS partition, and the process of restoring can be carried out even if the primary system is corrupted.

It is not yet confirmed by Apple if they plan to extend this huge facility to the older iPhone models later on or if that would not be possible to incorporate it in older hardware. Nonetheless, it does make the process seamless and easier for users to fix firmware issues and reduces dependency on external tools as well as on repair stores to carry out the process and thus, marks a huge leap in bringing forward a more streamlined system.
