Uncharted 4, will be pushing the boundaries in facial animation, with faces featuring up to 500 joints. Naughty Dog's Josh Scherr, in an interview with GamesTM magazine, explained that the studio is trying hard to provide realistic facial animation to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
“We have completely renovated the facial animation. In previous games like Uncharted and The Last of Us, the characters were from 90 to 100 “joints” in their faces. Now, all the faces have 300 to 500 joints. This allows us to be more detailed and more faithful, so as to give greater emphasis to what the characters say, and use poses that we could not use before. It allows us to better tell our stories, animate our characters – we hope that all of you will notice that it will be something more than just a technical feature; something that binds the emotions the characters.”
Josh Scherr, is one of the writers for Uncharted 4: A Thief's end, and as he explained, having more realistic animations allows players to recognise and identify emotion in the characters. A recent tweet made by Naughty Dog, that featured actors Nolan North and Troy Baker, teased an emotional scene.
More Life-like facial animations will allow Naughty Dog to portray the actors performances to a much greater extent, resulting in providing a much deeper and emotionally moving experience, that will make players feel closer to the game's characters and more invested in the story.
With the disappointing announcement that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is to be delayed to Spring 2016, the studio will have plenty of time to make Uncharted 4, the best game it be. Lets hope that Naughty Dog shares with us something exciting at E3 2015 next June, to satiate our appetite. With so many incredibly exciting games that will be likely making an appearance at E3 this year, it will certainly be one amazing time to be a gamer.
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is currently planned for a Spring 2016 release exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
