Today in Android: Nokia 2, 3, 6 and Asus Zenfone 3 to Get Oreo Updates and More
The hardware on the newly released Nokia phones is above-average, at best. However, the software side of things is a lot better as HMD Global seems committed to pushing Android Oreo on all their devices. Today, three more Nokia devices received Oreo updates (albeit some are still in Beta). The Nokia 3’s Oreo beta program is open for users, and you can register for it here. The Nokia 2 will bypass the Oreo 8.0 update and hop over to Oreo 8.1, owing to better memory optimization. This was confirmed by a Tweet posted by HMD Global’s product manager, Juho Sarvikas. The Tweet states:

Additionally, the 2017 variant of the Nokia 6 also received it’s Oreo update, but only in the Chinese market. The update for the Nokia 6 2017 is 1587 MB in size and will be delivered to the yourr device over the air, once it’s cleared for your market.
Asus Zenfone 3 to get Android Oreo 8.0
ASUS announced that the entire lineup of ZenFone 3 and 4 devices would receive updates to Android 8.0 Oreo. However, the company’s didn’t commit to any time frame and stated that every phone would have Oreo by the second half of 2018. The ZenFone 4 received the update last month, and now the ZenFone 3’s turn.
The update was announced on ASUS ZenTalk and is about 1.5GB in size. It has a version number of 15.0410.1712.31. It brings all of Oreo’s features such as Picture-in-Picture mode with changes in the Launcher and Settings UI. Some pre-installed apps such as MiniMovie, Photo Collage, and Do It Later have been removed and can be downloaded from the Play Store, if needed.
Essential Phone gets another camera update
The Essential Phone has had a long-standing issue with its camera and camera app. Recently, in a Reddit AMA, the developers promised a fix for the problems and today, they delivered. The Essential Phone is receiving an update that aims at fixing the camera app and more. The update is fairly minor but adds some welcome enhancements.
It works on improving the stability of the camera app itself, and the camera roll. Both apps have been prone to not responding to user input and crash afterwards. Finally, this update also adds support for app shortcuts to the company’s camera app. Long-pressing on the camera icon can now show a handful of shortcuts for accessing mono, selfie, and portrait modes on the camera. All of these changes are available now in the latest camera app version, available on the Google Play store.
Razer Phone Getting Updated With January Security Patch and More
Razer announced that an upcoming update would bring access to Netflix HDR and Dolby Plus 5.1 to the Razer Phone and it is rolling out right now. The update is 249MB in size and installs the Netflix app on your phone. The camera app also gets a few bug fixes and improvements. The update also includes the January security patch, which includes fixes for the Spectre and Meltdown exploits.
