Apple first introduced the Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus. Now, as the company launched it’s iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, more customers have their hands on the functionality. The Portrait mode basically adds the bokeh effect in which it blurs the background while keeping the subject in focus. However, not everyone can afford the new iPhone models that feature the Portrait Mode. However, if you want to make use if the function, there’s an app that allows you to create stunning photos with Portrait Mode effects on any iPhone model. The app is called Patch and it gets the job done pretty nicely. So let’s check it out.

Patch App Allows You To Add Bokeh Effects On Your Photos On Older iPhone Models

If you’re interested in trying out the app for yourself, it is available in the App Store for free. So you do not have to spend a single penny to give your photos the bokeh effect like you see in the Portrait Mode. Once you install the app, the first thing that you need to do is choose the photo to which you want to apply the effect. It is highly recommended that you choose a photo with a prominent background. So choose an image with a proper foreground for the effect to work in a neat way.

Once you select the photo, the app itself will decide the outline of the subject. the Patch app will then automatically blur the background. The process is pretty simple and the app does most of the work. However, the app does not carry out the selection part well, so you have to use the selection and erase tools in order to refine the selection of the foreground. You have the ability to zoom in and carry out selection for a more precise and sharp border. This will make the final product look more natural and much closer to the Portrait Mode on high-end iPhones.

Patch is available for the iPhone and iPad, but the editing and selection are considerably easy on the iPad, preferably with an Apple Pencil. This would allow you to cut out all the unnecessary selection and more. Since the app is available for free, you will see a small Patch watermark on the lower right-hand side of the image. However, you can remove it from the in-app purchase of $1.99.

Patch is a neat app to apply the Portrait Mode effect. It is available for older iPhone as well that does not feature the telephoto lens necessary for the effect to take place. So do check it out.
