With Resident Evil: Veronica launching next year, CAPCOM has remade the vast majority of the classic entries in its survival-horror series, leaving only a few titles left to remake utilizing its proprietary RE Engine. According to well-known insider Dusk Golem, a Resident Evil 5 remake will eventually happen due to fan demand, but it may be years until it hits PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo consoles, as Capcom doesn't have a strong desire to develop the game at the time.
"While I think a Resident Evil 5 Remake will probably happen in the future due to fan demand, at present I've heard there's not a strong desire within the company to remake RE5 presently, there's other projects the team wants to do more," the insider said on X to clarify on the idea that CAPCOM is set to remake every entry in the series.
"That's not what's happening. There was desire from the teams to remake RE:2 & RE:4, fan initative/feedback & interest from some key people lead to Veronica, Zero, & RE:1 happening," Dusk Golem continued. As of now, there's more internal interest in remaking Resident Evil Revelations than Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6.
Fan demand for a Resident Evil 5 remake, however, will ensure it arrives at some point, as it was the reason Resident Evil Zero is being remade. "The survey that lead to Veronica & Zero Remake being brought up was the one held around RE:3/Village time, this was before RE:4 was even announced. There was a question involving which Resident Evil titles fans wanted remade in the RE franchise. From what I hear, the obvious winner was Code Veronica, & Zero was the runner-up. At the time, RE fans had a stronger push of what RE titles "needed" a remake most. It wasn't the only deciding factor, like if there's people in the company who want to take it on, but was part of the reason," Dusk Golem explained.
While fans would definitely love to see a Resident Evil 5 remake at some point, it's understandable how no one at Capcom seems interested in developing. Although the game is still very fun to play, it feels very different from the rest of the series, and its setting and premise are rather controversial. As such, the entire game would require some heavy reworking for a remake.
Resident Evil 6's case is possibly even worse. Unlike 5, which aged well, the sixth entry in the series is considerably different from all its predecessors, with a co-op centered experience that was met with such a mixed reception that the entire franchise seemed to be done until the release of Resident Evil 7 Biohazard which righted the ship and brought the series' popularity to new heights.
