Last month, in a surprise reveal, Nintendo announced yet another Star Fox remake simply titled 'Star Fox' for the Nintendo Switch 2. It was a shock reveal in its execution though less shocking in its content, since the latest Super Mario Galaxy Movie heavily featured the character, seemingly implying there was more Fox McCloud down the pipeline. Now, we're weeks away from its release date, and during today's Nintendo Direct, a demo for the game was announced and released for Switch 2 players, but it was after the Direct ended that we got the most interesting bit of information on the game yet.

That being the fact that this remake isn't made by Nintendo, or at least that it isn't entirely made by Nintendo. Velan Studios, the team behind games like the now-shuttered live service title Knockout City and Midnight Murder Club, the intense hide-and-seek shooter, have been collaborating with Nintendo on the coming Star Fox remake.

"We've been passionately working on this for a while, and we're so proud to finally share it with the world: Velan Studios is the developer of Star Fox!," the studio wrote in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. "Collaborating with Nintendo and bringing Fox McCloud and crew to Nintendo Switch 2 is truly an honor."

The studio continued to explain that the game was made on its proprietary VIPER engine that "allowed us to bring Fox and his crew back in higher fidelity than ever before, with gameplay running at 60 FPS and all cinematics rendered in real-time."

Nintendo and Velan Studios have actually had a working relationship before Star Fox, as Velan also worked on Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, the RC toys that worked alongside a Nintendo Switch console to bring Mario Kart into your living room.

It'll be interesting to see if Velan Studios gets tapped again to do more within the Star Fox universe, or if the studio is helping Nintendo out on other remake projects, like the Ocarina of Time remake Nintendo finally revealed. In the meantime, we can look forward to playing Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026.
