Japanese developer PocketPair has just released version 1.0 of Palworld, the game that became an overnight sensation when it launched in early access in January 2024, breaking sales records left and right for a while.
Judging by Steam data, it seems like the fever is back. While the game's full version did not go anywhere near the all-time peak of 2.1 million concurrent users registered at the early access launch (a figure that's still the third highest ever recorded on Valve's platform), Palworld nonetheless lured a lot of people back, with the weekend's peak reaching 855K concurrent users.
Version 1.0 introduced big changes, after all. The World Tree, the giant landmark that loomed on the horizon sealed behind a red energy barrier, is finally explorable. It now serves as the game's primary endgame region and story focus, giving high-level players a new, much tougher area to tackle. The new Sunreach Sky Islands float above the Palpagos Islands, each featuring its own distinct Pals and resources.
The Wing Pack is a new equipment-slot flight item that lets players glide and fly without dedicating one of their five Pal party slots to a flying companion. Because it occupies a gear slot rather than a Pal slot, players can fly while keeping a full combat team active.
More than 20 new Pals have been added in the largest single-update batch in Palworld's history, including the Sky Dragon, Tree Guardian, Giant Whale, and the notable Sword Eel. Pocketpair has reiterated that Pokémon-style Pal evolutions remain off the table, as expected by a company that's still fighting Nintendo's lawsuit (albeit with a much better prospect now). However, the game features genetic Recombination, a new breeding system that lets players combine genes from Legendary Pals to produce more powerful and distinctive offspring with unique traits.
Existing Tower Bosses have also been overhauled with new attack patterns and more complex, mechanic-driven phases. Entirely new bosses have also been added, including a new high-danger "MAX" difficulty area featuring a powerful boss and premium loot.
As for Wildlife Sanctuaries and No-Hunting Zones, these areas have been redesigned with more distinct terrain, unique materials, rare Pals, and dedicated new bosses, aiming to make each feel like its own destination rather than a reused map template.
Moreover, Palworld got its first proper narrative arc, with new story missions expanding on the history of the Palpagos Islands, the significance of the World Tree, and the Tower Bosses.
On the Building and Customization side, the long-requested water-based building finally arrived, along with new structure sets, decorations, and a Paint Mode for base customization. PvP has also been added, along with new dedicated-server features, including server clustering to link multiple servers together.
PC players can improve the visuals of Palworld with the new UItra Graphics mod, which leverages the tool UE4SS to inject ray traced Lumen global illumination, extended view distance, improved sunlight and ambient lighting, and dynamic shadows for torches and other light sources.
