Sony Announces the Schedule for Android Pie Updates to Xperia Devices

Sony released a list of devices due to receive Pie some time ago. Not too long after, the company then rolled out the Android Pie update to the Sony Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact. Also, the Sony Xperia XZ3 is the first Android phone to launch with Android 9 Pie out of the box. Today, Sony has revealed the roll-out schedule for the Android Pie update. It will be arriving on a few smartphones earlier than the previously revealed timeline of November.

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Sony Xperia XZ1, and Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact will receive Android Pie starting October 26. Similarly, Owners of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium will be receiving it from November 7. The company has stuck to its promised schedule so far, so we're confident that the updates will start hitting the devices at the specified times.

There is both good and bad news for mid-range Sony devices. The good news is that they will receive Pie, but the bad news is that it isn't until next year. The Sony Xperia XA2, Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra, and the Sony Xperia XA2 Plus will only start receiving the update from March 4, 2019. It’s a bit disappointing to see, but nothing out of the ordinary.Mid-range phones are typically given a lower priority for updates by device makers, who choose to focus on flagship phones. It doesn’t seem as if this fact will be changing for Sony this generation. All things considered, March next year doesn't seem later. We know for a fact that several devices will have to wait for much longer than that to get Pie so March doesn't seem too far off.
