AMD’s Frank Azor Pushes Back on FSR 4.1 Cancellation Rumor for RDNA 3.5 iGPUs, Says No Such Decision Has Been Made

Frank Azor, CVP of Client and Graphics Marketing at AMD, took to X to dispel rumors surrounding FSR 4.1 being restricted from RDNA 3.5 iGPU solutions.

Frank Azor Denies Rumors AMD Cancelled FSR 4.1 For RDNA 3.5 iGPUs

The rumor that FSR 4.1 wouldn't be coming to RDNA 3.5 iGPUs started from a conversation Hardware Luxx had with David McAfee, CVP and GM of Client at AMD. Hardware Luxx reported that according to David, FSR 4.1 is not planned for RDNA 3.5 graphics for the time being. However, after the news was circulated over the internet, Frank Azor stepped in to clarify that no such decision has been made internally at AMD.

Frank stresses that no decision to cancel FSR 4.1 for RDNA 3.5 has been made internally at AMD, and goes on to reassure us that AMD is listening to its customers.

It's Great That AMD Has Responded So Quickly, But It Raises A Few Questions

Frank has used this exact tweet to respond to Twitter posts from Digital Foundry, Videocardz, and Pirat_Nation, indicating that AMD really doesn't want this rumor circulating anymore. Although this is pure conjecture on my part, perhaps AMD wants to protect the image of its Strix and Gorgon Halo RDNA 3.5 based APUs, as Nvidia's recently launched RTX Spark arrives soon with confirmed support for DLSS tech. Certainly, it's unusual for AMD to respond so quickly to a rumor, although it is a welcome change to their approach in communications.

In any case, we can be sure that if AMD restricts FSR 4.1 for Strix/Gorgon Halo, it won't be due to any technical limitations as some have theorized. In our testing, we found that Strix Halo is able to run FSR 4 INT 8 with no issues, not even needing 3rd party mods like Optiscaler for some titles. We'll have to wait and see how this story develops, but I remain hopeful that RDNA 3.5 iGPUs will get the upscaling tech they always deserved. Given that competing chips from Intel and Nvidia will have full suites of modern upscaling tech, it's imperative that AMD does the right thing here.
