Some M3 Macs Have Been Sitting In A Warehouse, Waiting To Ship Since July, According To An Unreleased macOS 13.5 Build

Apple unveiled three new M3 Macs during its October 30 ‘Scary Fast’ event, but it was not like the company decided to release these models at the 11th hour. According to the latest evidence, the technology giant has planned for months to get the new hardware onto shelves, as they have been sitting in a warehouse since July of this year.

Earlier, it was reported that Apple was forced to launch the new M3 Macs because shipments of its hardware range had dropped by almost 25 percent in Q3 2023. While the latter half is true, the California-based firm had intended to reveal the M3 iMac and M3 MacBook Pro range for months, and according to the latest evidence, the company was waiting for the right opportunity to unveil these. Just a few hours ago, @aaronp613 noticed that Apple released two new versions of Rosetta for macOS 13.5, which had been out since July.

After confirming with MacRumors Forums, it was found that some of these M3 Macs shipped with an unreleased version of macOS 13.5, indicating that the new models have been sitting in a warehouse since July, just waiting to be shipped. Apple was likely aware that its Mac shipments were dwindling fast, so it needed to launch newer versions so that its upcoming earnings report would look better than the previous one. The strategy worked with the iPhone 15 launch, as the firm’s Q4 2023 earnings mentioned that iPhone sales grew from $42.6 billion in Q4 2022 to $43.8 billion in the latest quarter.

However, it should be noted that the new Macs are significantly more expensive than the iPhone 15 lineup, and with only the M3 Max offering a significant performance gain compared to the previous generation, we are not sure how big of an impact the M3 Macs will make in Apple’s next earnings call. Regardless, in an M3 MacBook Pro review roundup, several critics praised the company’s cutting-edge 3nm chip, its performance, and efficiency attributes but were bummed out about the steep cost, so while there are improvements from the latest offerings, it comes at a price, literally.
