Sea of Thieves debuted on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch last month and has done rather well on Sony's console, managing to become among the most downloaded titles for the last month.

A new post on the Official PlayStation Blog confirmed how Rare's pirate-themed multiplayer game was the most downloaded game in Europe, beating smashing successes like Grand Theft Auto V and Helldivers 2. In the US and Canada, the game was "only" the third most downloaded game in April, right after the aforementioned Helldivers 2 and Shift Up's Stellar Blade.

The release of Sea of Thieves and Hi-Fi Rush on PlayStation 5 marked the beginning of a shift in strategy for Microsoft. The release of Rare's multiplayer game on rival consoles was said to be a crucial test for other former Xbox exclusives coming to other systems, a successful test, judging from the game's success on PlayStation 5.

Sea of Thieves' success on PlayStation 5 is the only good news for Xbox in a challenging week. A few days ago, it was confirmed that Tango Gameworks, the team behind The Evil Within series and the popular Hi-Fi Rush, and Arkane Austin, the developer of Prey and Redfall, were shut down. The decision was met with widespread disapproval, with some staging rather creative forms of protest.
