Google has decided to do what it does best - rename another of its services. The search engine giant is preparing to rename Bard to Gemini, and this is going to spread across all the existing devices and services. This means that Bard will no longer be a thing in the future, and some of us may have seen that coming from a mile away.
Renaming Bard to Gemini does not make sense, but it's Google, so it does not come as a surprise
During the Pixel 8 event last year, Google talked extensively about how the company is looking to ensure that Assistant, along with all its features, are combined into a single service that makes everything better. Then we heard that Assistant with Bard was going to become a thing. Now, it appears that Gemini is the one thing that will be replacing Bard altogether, as the evidence is already coming up.
A new revelation has shown that Google is actually renaming Bard, as the web page says, "Bard is now Gemini." This change is being spotted not just across mobile devices but also appears on the web version, which means that Google is taking things seriously, and we are going to see this change soon. In addition to that, Bard Advanced could end up becoming Gemini Advanced if this trend follows, so that is one thing that we have to keep in mind when preparing for the future.
Although I do not have a personal preference as far as the naming scheme is concerned, yet it is sad to see Bard getting rebranded. Google is notorious for killing off its products and services or renaming them, and in this case, it is another identity change. It is not as bad as Twitter turning into X, but it still is something that a lot of us speculated about, considering Google's history.
Keep in mind that the change is not rolling out at the moment, and it is going to take some time before Google completely revamps it. Considering how the company operates, we might not even get an official confirmation as to why this change has happened in the first place. One rationale that I can think of is that Google does not want to have a lot of AI-related products because it will only confuse people. But then again, Gemini exists just like Lumiere does, and this means that the search engine giant could get rid of one or the other.
Being a lifelong Google user, I have slowly seen the death and rebranding of Google services, and honestly, at some point, it stopped making any sense. Despite being a very successful company and being a household name, there appears to be something that is still missing. Bard or Gemini, I do not think Google should have gone ahead with the rebrand as it severely impacts the brand identity.
