Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra is currently equipped with two telephoto cameras, with the less capable one being a 3x unit that’s often criticized by tipsters like Ice Universe for its lack of imaging prowess when compared to rivals. Now, with Apple adopting variable aperture technology to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, a drastic decision could be made with the Galaxy S27 Ultra involving the removal of the aforementioned camera.
The 3x telephoto camera is rumored to disappear from the Galaxy S27 Ultra, but there’s no telling what will arrive in its place
The tipster has been a strong critic of Samsung being incredibly slow regarding camera upgrades for its flagship smartphones, with the 3x telephoto unit receiving the brunt of his harsh comments. After all, the current sensor in the Galaxy S26 Ultra only supports a maximum resolution of 10MP, while Chinese competitors have switched over to much higher resolution alternatives.
Also, seeing as Apple will transition to the technology and market it as a major selling point for buyers, Samsung has little choice but to adopt it, especially as it’s losing the smartphone race against its rival. Even now, where the Cupertino firm has yet to yield to the DRAM shortage by refusing to make its products expensive, the Korean giant has folded and introduced price hikes on older models.

While Apple is one reason Samsung removed the 3x telephoto camera from the Galaxy S27 Ultra, another is that it’s just a redundant addition to an otherwise versatile configuration. The company employs super-high-resolution 200MP cameras to its top-end flagship smartphones, which can crop the primary image to achieve that 3x zoom shot that looks near-identical to something captured by the 10MP shooter.
By removing this camera, Samsung would save a ton of money, but Ice Universe hasn’t mentioned what the company will add in its place on the Galaxy S27 Ultra. We have talked about a rumor that the Korean technology behemoth was said to bring back variable aperture technology as a direct response to the iPhone 18 launch.
Sadly, there’s no confirmation on whether the upgrade will arrive to the Galaxy S27 Ultra. In short, we should keep our fingers crossed for more updates, but Samsung should get darn serious about the imaging side of its devices.
