Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil, The Evil Within and Vanquish is working on a new AAA fantasy game

[UPDATE - April 1, 2026] Today, South Korean developer SHIFT UP (known for Stellar Blade) has announced the acquisition of Shinji Mikami's UNBOUND studio. Learn more at this link.

[ORIGINAL STORY] Shinji Mikami, the legendary creator of the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis series, is working with his new studio Unbound Games (previously known as Kamuy)on a new AAA multiplatform fantasy game that could possibly be powered by Unreal Engine, according to a new job listing discovered today by Tech4Gamers.

All of the first details on the yet-to-be-announced game have been revealed by the job listing for the Effects (VFX)/Effects Designer position at Unbound Games. "This job involves designing and expressing various visual effects in the game, both realistic and unrealistic (fire, water, explosions, magic, hit marks, etc.). You will work in cooperation with all sections to propose effect ideas, design and create the visuals and movements, and be responsible for implementing them into the final game," the job description reads via machine translation, hinting at the fantasy elements this game may have.

The rest of the job listing for Shinji Mikami's next project after his departure from Tango Gameworks (which was closed by Microsoft in 2024 but was eventually brought back by Krafton in 2025) does not reveal anything else about it, other than the fact that it has a good chance of being powered by Unreal Engine, as experience using the Epic engine, as well as Unity, is welcome for this position. Unreal Engine has sort of become the industry standard, so that would be hardly surprising.

While Shinji Mikami has made a name for himself with survival horror games such as the first entries in the Resident Evil series, the legendary Japanese game developer has worked on all sorts of different games. This includes the intense third-person action game Vanquish, the over-the-top third-person action-adventure Shadows of the Damned in collaboration with another legendary Japanese game developer, Goichi "Suda51" Suda, and the cult classic God Hand published by CAPCOM in 2006. This franchise is the one Mikami-san would love to bring back the most as he told me back in 2024, so, hopefully, some of the elements that made it such a great game to play will appear in this yet-to-be-announced new game.
