Rebel Wolves surprised fans at Summer Game Fest when it aired a teaser trailer showing The Blood of Dawnwalker protagonist Coen in an entirely different setting.
The game itself is set in 14th-century Eastern Europe, but this trailer showed a modern-day courier delivering him a sack of blood. The significance was obvious: the Polish studio aims to create a whole saga centered on Coen.
In recent interviews, Rebel Wolves have opened up on their roadmap. Speaking to Eurogamer, Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz revealed that part of the reason is to keep the creative juices flowing by jumping across ages and cultures.
This is the kind of thing exactly: to travel through the ages and through cultures. This is really important for many reasons. There's more fun in telling different stories from many places on Earth, because we need to learn those cultures, we need to learn those legends, we need to think how to fit into these historical events, which are in that particular place. This will be a refreshment for us in every next part of the game, because we have this challenge in front of us, of doing something really fresh, something really cool. And at the same time, we know that we are doing a consistent story and we know where it's leading.
In an interview with Radio Times Gaming, Tomaszkiewicz added that the whole overarching plot across multiple games is already done:
We have the whole plot and we know how this arc could look like… It's easier to plan another part of the game, connect them together and create the choices and the consequences in this particular game because you know that you need to move them to the next part.
But there's more. While a few games have attempted this feat before, the list grows even thinner when adding the save portability from game to game, which Bandai Namco confirmed to Eurogamer:
There will be an option to carry the save from the first game.
There's basically only two roleplaying games that keep the same protagonist and let you import meaningful choices from previous entries: Mass Effect and The Witcher. Of course, this may not be entirely surprising, given that several developers working on The Blood of Dawnwalker (including Tomaszkiewicz himself) previously worked on Geralt's saga at CD Projekt RED.
Still, the whole point of a saga is moot unless the first game does well enough. We'll know soon: The Blood of Dawnwalker is gold and will be released on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
