Upscaling technology has made a lot of improvements since it first became popular. NVIDIA's DLSS is on version 4.5, AMD's FSR is set to get its latest version called FSR Diamond, and now PlayStation's own PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is getting its own upgrade with PSSR 2, which is officially releasing today for all PSR Pro owners.

A PlayStation Blog post confirmed that the new upscaling tech will be supported by 12 games starting today, which are:

It'll also come to Assassin's Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 in the coming weeks. While the aforementioned blog post also came with comments from developers about how big of an improvement PSSR 2 is over PSSR 1, we also got our first analytical dive into PSSR 2 from Digital Foundry, one of the most trusted sources for performance analytics across the industry.

After discussing the improvements PSSR 2 brings to games like Silent Hill f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, DF's Oliver Mackenzie wrapped things up by saying, "My experience is that this is a big improvement over PSSR 1. So big that it justifies the existence of PS5 Pro almost on its own."

"PS5 Pro always seemed exciting from a hardware level. It kind of took bits and pieces from the AMD IP bin along with this custom machine learning acceleration to deliver a much-improved console that could hang with PC that could deliver good experiences in ray tracing that could shore up 60 FPS modes that are really popular this generation, but have image quality concessions...On image quality, PSSR 1 was quite mediocre at best. It was kind of hanging in the mix with analytical upscalers. In some respects it was worse, and when PSSR 1 failed, it could fail really badly...but by bringing the upscaler up to par, seemingly without any real performance penalty, we're getting vastly improved image quality and I think developers are going to have a lot more freedom to configure their PS5 Pro games now."

Mackenzie did couch his comments with the fact that PSSR 2 is still missing some of the best features from upscalers on top-end PC systems, but that, for a console experience, this is "a really nice improvement." DF's Alex Battaglia agreed that this upgrade is a big jump, and that as long as developers can take proper advantage of PSSR 2, we won't have any more situations where PSSR actually makes games look worse on PS5 Pro than they do on base PS5.

Of course, only time will tell if that actually is the case as we see more games arrive with PSSR 2 support and have it added on later, like Onimusha Way of the Sword.
