The Pixel Fold was Google’s first attempt at a device with a unique form factor, but there were various missed opportunities, such as using a capable chipset than the Tensor G2 it employed previously. The company might learn from its mistakes because, according to the latest rumor, the upcoming Pixel Fold 2 will not only skip the Tensor G3 and make a jump to the new Tensor G4 but it is said to be tested with more upgrades, as you will learn about shortly.
New Pixel Fold 2 is reportedly being tested with more RAM, significantly faster storage than the Pixel Fold
A source that wishes to remain anonymous has informed Android Authority that previous prototypes of the Pixel Fold 2 being tested with the Tensor G3 were codenamed ‘zuma.’ However, Google has now upgraded the chipset and is seemingly testing the upcoming foldable flagship with the Tensor G4, with the device codenamed ‘zumapro.’ This can suggest that the upcoming handset might launch with a faster and possibly more efficient SoC, but time will tell what Google’s actual plans are.
The Pixel Fold 2 is reportedly in its Engineering Validation Test (EVT) stages, meaning there is still some time for the Pixel Fold successor to launch officially. However, the report states that there is a possibility that the device might be teased during the upcoming Google I/O 2024 keynote. In addition to the Tensor G4 upgrade, the Pixel Fold 2 might also ship with RAM and storage upgrades. Where the Pixel Fold was limited to 12GB LPDDR5 memory, we might see 16GB in the newer version.
As for storage, Google cut corners with the Pixel Fold as it used the slower UFS 3.1 standard. With the Pixel Fold 2, the latter might offer the speedier UFS 4.0 storage, making everything feel snappier, such as firing up applications, to slower load times, and more. Bumping the RAM count to 16GB makes complete sense as Google likely wants to integrate the Pixel Fold 2 with on-device AI capabilities, and as the majority of you have witnessed by now that running this kind of software requires heaps of memory.
The report did not touch on the pricing of the Pixel Fold 2, but even with the aforementioned upgrades, if Google can maintain the exact pricing as it did with the Pixel Fold, which was $1,799, customers might view it as a worthy upgrade as their daily driver. The Mountain View giant might one-up the competition by offering a reduced price compared to its predecessor, but we will check out the details during the official unveiling.
