It's officially Summer Game Fest 2026 week, and there are several showcases already set for this week, including a State of Play later today, the big opening SGF show later this week on June 5, 2026, and the weekend Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026. However, a leaker points to Nintendo entering the fray with their own Nintendo Direct next week on June 9, 2026, keeping the SGF festivities going well into next week.

The claim comes from Nash Weedle, a Spanish insider who we've previously seen make Nintendo-related predictions, though as is the case with any rumour, regardless of the sources reputation: take it with a grain of salt. If more news about this direct appears it'll definitely add more fuel to the rumour, but for now it remains unconfirmed.

Weedle's subtle prediction uses imagery pointing to the American release date for Animal Crossing: New Leaf as a way of hinting at the date without actually spelling it out directly.

We've already had several Nintendo Direct showcases this year, the most recent of which being focused on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which had yet to premiere at the time of the direct. We've had Indie Directs and Partner Directs, the aforementioned Galaxy Movie-focused directs, and other presentations entirely focused on one game, like the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream direct earlier this year.

We have not, however, had a general Nintendo Direct event yet for 2026, and if ever there was a time for one, it would be June, during the craze of Summer Game Fest. The last time that happened was only two short years ago in 2024, and though we didn't get a general direct in 2025, there was a Donkey Kong Bananza direct in June. There was also a general direct in 2023, and a Partner Showcase direct in 2022.

That's all to say that Nintendo has established a clear pattern of hosting events in June. Now, Weedle doesn't exactly predict it'll be a general direct, but that's the only kind of direct event we've not had yet, making it all the more likely that we'll finally have one for 2026.

Again, take all of this pattern recognition and Weedle's claim of an event next week with a grain of salt, but it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility. Hopefully, we'll be looking at the SGF fun continuing on June 9, 2026.
