The Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 could finally feature new designs, along with a chipset upgrade, assuming the latest report is to be believed. With these upgrades, Microsoft is not just reported to give both machines a chassis makeover but also a much-needed specifications bumps. With Qualcomm having unveiled its Snapdragon X Elite, it is not difficult to imagine that the software giant will likely use this silicon to fuel the innards of at least one of these models.

In addition to using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite for either the Surface Pro 10 or the Surface Laptop 6, Windows Central reports that Intel’s latest 14th-generation CPUs will also be used, giving more options to consumers who wish to go down the path of using an ARM chipset or experience the benefits of Intel’s Arrow Lake lineup. However, the report states that both models will share a Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which can help optimize certain settings, such as improving power draw or battery life, depending on the work done on one of these.
Internally, the Surface computers powered by Qualcomm’s chipsets are called ‘CADMUS’ and will be developed for Microsoft’s next version of Windows, which is codenamed Hudson Valley. It appears that with the departure of Panos Panay, Microsoft has decided to take a completely different direction, and for the better, as the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 can compete with Apple’s portable Mac lineup, along with those shipping with Intel’s 14th-generation processors. Microsoft has no other hardware upgrades lined up for 2024, though the company may announce a new version of the Surface Laptop Go next year.
For 2025, a new Surface Laptop Studio is being planned, but 2024 is where we will get to see how serious the software behemoth is about its hardware products. Given how pricey its current-generation Surface range has been and the lack of differentiation compared to the competition, it was high time for a multitude of changes. Hopefully, Microsoft markets the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 competitively, or it will be another lost opportunity, giving firms such as Apple an edge once again.
