An estimated 12,000 MediaTek employees will be eligible for bonuses for the second half of 2025. According to the latest report, the cumulative amount comes to NT$11.4 billion, or $363 million, with each employee receiving an average of NT$950,000, or $30,247.74 for H2 2025. The interesting bit about these figures is that the bonus handed to workers is said to be 15.7 percent lower than what they received in the first half of 2025, indicating that MediaTek could be preparing for a crunch period where it anticipates fewer chipset shipments due to the ongoing DRAM crisis.
Smartphone chipset business brings the lion’s share of revenue for MediaTek, putting the company in a dangerous position if it doesn’t diversify quickly
Like Samsung, Economic Daily News reports that MediaTek hands out bonuses twice every year, and the actual amount rewarded to an employee is based on the department, job level, and performance evaluation. Even though the report specifically doesn’t mention why the bonus amount for H2 2025 has been reduced compared to H1 2025, we believe there’s a direct correlation with the ongoing RAM and storage shortage.
For the Q4 2025 period, MediaTek registered a smartphone chipset revenue that accounted for 59 percent of the total, highlighting a problem where the company is far too dependent on one business. A separate report also stated that the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor manufacturer would be struck the hardest because of the current components shortage.
Fortunately, MediaTek is slowly diversifying into other businesses, but it will take a while before it becomes less dependent on its smartphone chipset sector. This reliance could be why the technology firm has lowered employees’ bonuses for the second half of 2025. Later this year, the Dimensity 9600 is expected to launch and will be the company’s first 2nm chipset.
However, advanced lithography won’t be the only factor determining MediaTek’s annual shipments. It will also have to focus on architectural improvements, but it still stands to retain its dominant position in the smartphone chipset shipments race if its premium SoC is priced less than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.
According to a previous projection, MediaTek is expected to remain the market leader thanks to its Dimensity chipsets for 2026, but it isn’t immune to the DRAM and NAND crisis, resulting in a shipment decline for the year. Unless these figures show improvement, employee bonuses may remain stagnant this year.
