Virtually every facet of the consumer electronics sphere is reeling right now from the relentless cost pressures that seem to be emanating from nearly each stage of the production process. Against this hyperinflationary backdrop, MediaTek is apparently gearing up to implement "structural" price hikes for its upcoming flagship Dimensity 9600 series chips.

MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 is now expected to cost significantly more than the $180 - $200 per unit price of its predecessor

According to a Taiwan-based publication, after implementing price adjustments for some of its more mature products, MediaTek is now gearing up to hike the prices of its upcoming flagship chips, dubbed the Dimensity 9600 and Dimensity 9600 Pro.

The publication notes that MediaTek is able to increase the prices of its mobile SoCs, connectivity chips, and smart device-geared product lines right now as its position is being "bolstered by inventory stocking for new handsets and recovering demand in emerging markets."

Even so, as per the industry trends gleaned by the publication, the oncoming "wave of price increases is still a structural recovery, and not all products can rise simultaneously," especially low-end consumer chips, where price sensitivity still reigns supreme.

For the benefit of those who might not be aware, the Dimensity 9600 Pro is expected to leverage TSMC's N2P process node, and sport the following CPU architecture:

  1. 2x ARM C2-Ultra core (clocked at around 5GHz)
  2. 3x ARM C2-Premium cores
  3. 3x ARM C2-Pro cores

As for the vanilla Dimensity 9600, it might leverage TSMC's cheaper N2 process and come equipped with an LPDDR5X RAM vs. the LPDDR6 RAM within its Pro counterpart.

Finally, do note that Dimensity 9500 costs between $180 and $200 per unit, while Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 retails for around $280 per unit. This means that the Dimensity 9500 offers a discount of around 28 percent relative to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Now, we already know that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is expected to cost upwards of $300. Assuming the same relative pricing regime, the Dimensity 9600 Pro might cost in excess of $216.
