Marvel's Wolverine has been in the works for a while, but the long wait is almost over, as the new game by Insomniac will launch in one of the most densely packed Septembers of the past few years. Today, an extended look at the gameplay has arrived during the State of Play presentation following last year's first look, and it's as intense and gory as expected.

The new footage, captured on PlayStation 5 Pro, provided a new look at a rescue mission. Using over-the-shoulder camera perspective, the sequence begins with a tense stealth segment where Logan utilizes his signature claws to kill enemies unaware. The claws are also the core of the fast-paced and visceral combat, while the environmental traversal takes full advantage of Logan’s mutant abilities. As the mission progresses, Jean Grey makes an appearance to aid Wolverine in direct combat.

The new Marvel's Wolverine gameplay showcase also provided a first look at the special abilities powered by a cooldown system, which are mapped to L2 utton and a corresponding face button. Alongside these abilities, Wolverine will be able to use the environment to defeat enemies, slamming enemies directly onto sharp objects to get impaled.

Outside of standard foot combat, the footage offered a brief look at a short vehicle sequence featuring a motorcycle ride, as well as at an elite enemy wielding a high-powered energy melee weapon. Should players fall in battle like Logan did in the demo, players, will be able to regenerate health and revive by rapidly mashing the Square button.

Wrapping up the presentation, a new short trailer provided another quick look at what awaits Wolverine on his journey, while providing the first look at Mystique and Sabertooth.

The journey to the Marvel's Wolverine gameplay reveal has been a long and turbulent one for developer Insomniac Games. Following the game's reveal with a short teaser trailer in 2021, the studio has been silent on the game as it focused on the Marvel's Spider-Man series, only to have the first look at the game get spoiled by a massive leak that showed for the first time how different the experience would be compared to Peter Parker and Miles Morales' adventures.

Built around brutal melee combat, heavy dismemberment, and a darker narrative tone for an experience that felt closer to the recent God of War games, Insomniac Games already proved with that very early build that they had what it takes to faithfully adapt into a video game one of the most beloved Marvel Comics characters ever. And with today's gameplay reveal, the studio further cemented that Marvel's Wolverine is not only going to be an intense experience when it launches on September 15, but also has the potential to be a Game of the Year contender.
