Nioh, Dynasty Warriors, Wo Long, and Dead or Alive makers and publishers Koei Tecmo have another project in the works alongside the games we're already aware of, including Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember and Attack on Titan 3. Spotted by Automaton, a listing for a new, original IP currently under the codename FUJI appeared on the list of projects supported by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) via its IP360 program.
Koei Tecmo isn't the only recognizable name on this list of projects supported by the IP360 initiative. Machine translation of the official website shows plenty of other well-known companies, including Kadokawa, SEGA, Square Enix, Konami, and Arc System Works, all make appearances on the list with supported initiatives and projects. The difference here is that Koei Tecmo's listing provides some new information.
Not a lot of new information, but notable nonetheless, as we have a peak at what the studio is working on next. The same machine translation of Koei Tecmo's listing reads, "Leveraging Koei Tecmo Games' expertise in oriental-themed visuals and action games, the company will develop a completely new IP game title, aiming for a worldwide hit and broad IP expansion starting from the game."
A game that includes "oriental themed visuals" and "action" sounds like how you could describe a lot of Koei Tecmo's games, but the more intriguing element of this is obviously the fact that this is a new, original IP. Whatever it is, Koei Tecmo seems to be positioning it as a project that it hopes establishes a new pillar in the company's franchise portfolio.
If you've been playing any of Koei Tecmo's, or more accurately, any of its subsidiary Team Ninja's releases, then you'll recognize this as just the latest franchise the publisher is looking to create. We got the first Nioh game in 2017, the first of (at least two) Wo Long games in 2023, and then Rise of the Ronin in 2025. Now, as Nioh continues to enjoy the success of its third entry, Koei Tecmo is seemingly looking to keep its momentum of new IPs going.
Nioh 3, as one of the company's more recent releases, stands as "the culmination of Team NINJA’s evolution," writes Wccftech's Francesco De Meo, who gave it a 9.8/10 in his review. "By masterfully blending the engaging exploration of an open-field structure with a deep, dual-style combat system that bridges the gap between 'Masocore' and character-action, it has evolved into a genre of its own. While technical issues hold the game back, it is the definitive samurai fantasy and a modern masterpiece of action design."
