The iPhone 16 will stand short of some of the features coming with next year's iPhone 17 lineup. A prominent analyst states that Apple will introduce a new iPhone 17 'Slim' model while the iPhone 17 Pro Max receives a smaller Dynamic Island.
Analyst states Apple will launch a new iPhone 17 Slim model next year, only iPhone 17 Pro Max to come with a smaller Dynamic Island
From what we have heard, Apple is looking to redesign the iPhone 17 lineup, according to Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu (via 9to5mac). While details on the design are scarce at this stage, Pu specifically mentions that Apple will replace the iPhone 17 Plus with a new 'Slim' model. Other than the design, the Dynamic Island will finally see some changes as well.
Jeff Pu reports that Apple will launch four iPhone 17 models next year. The standard iPhone 17 will come with a 6.1-inch screen, but the iPhone 17 Slim will house a slightly smaller 6.6-inch panel. The 'Pro' models would come with the same screen size as the iPhone 16 Pro models.
Pu also reports that apart from the iPhone 17 Pro Max, all models will come with a "more complex" aluminum design. The company could make certain adjustments to differentiate the material from what we have seen in the past.
As for the highest-end iPhone 17 Pro Max, it will still come with a titanium frame. It will also be the only device in the lineup to come with a "narrowed Dynamic Island. This means that the rest of the variants will stick to the same Dynamic Island as the iPhone 16 models. It is likely that both 'Pro' models will come with a narrow Dynamic Island, as Apple likes to keep things streamlined. However, the report suggests otherwise.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max's proximity sensors will utilize the metalens technology, which will aid in reducing the size of the Face ID components. Pu also highlighted the potential specifications of the iPhone 17 lineup. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim will come with 8GB of RAM and A18 or A19 chips, while the 'Pro' models will rock 12GB of RAM coupled with an A19 Pro chip.
This year, Apple will use 8GB of RAM on all four variants, but the company will create differentiating factors between the standard and the 'Pro' models next year. Moreover, the iPhone 17 lineup will use a 24MP sensor for the front camera, which is a significant upgrade compared to the current models. Do you think the iPhone 16 lineup will house incremental changes over the iPhone 15?
