iPhone 16 Pro to feature an upgraded ultra-wide abgle camera with a 48MP sensor for low light photography

The iPhone 15 Pro received MKBHD's best camera award last year among tough competition. The company introduced new features that allowed for better low-light photography and videography. However, the company plans to improve the camera further with the iPhone 16 launch. According to the latest, the iPhone 16 Pro's ultra-wide camera will receive a significant upgrade over the current iPhone 15 Pro.

iPhone 16 Pro will feature an upgraded 48MP ultra-wide camera for better low-light photography

Renders of the iPhone 16 Pro surfaced recently, aiming to show major changes coming to the higher-end models, including the smaller Dynamic Island. Now, it is being reported that the iPhone 16 Pro will feature an upgraded ultra-wide camera. The news was shared by prominent industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in his latest Medium post, highlighting that the iPhone 16 Pro will feature an upgraded 48MP ultra-wide camera.

This will be the first time the iPhone's ultra-wide sensor will bump the megapixel count to 48, up from 12 megapixels on the current and older models. This also means the telephoto lens will be the only sensor on the iPhone's back with a 12MP resolution. The higher resolution ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro will allow the device to capture more light. The addition will enable the device to capture enhanced low-light photos at an ultra-wide angle.

Apple jumped to the 48MP primary camera with the launch of the iPhone 14 Pro models. The change was brought to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models. The primary camera uses the "pixel binning" technology to merge results from four pixels onto a single one. This ultimately adds more detail and allows for better low-light photography. The company plans to use the same technology on the iPhone 16 Pro's ultra-wide camera.

While it is a welcome addition, the change will make room for further advancements. For instance, the higher megapixel count will allow the ultra-wide camera to capture ProRAW photos. This is mainly a specific format for editors who require more flexibility and options to play around with. This is not the first time we have heard details on the iPhone 16 Pro's ultra-wide upgrade. Jeff Pu reported last year that the 2024 flagship iPhones will launch with an upgraded ultra-wide angle lens.

The credible insights from Ming-Chi Kuo make the feature very likely to arrive this year on the iPhone 16 Pro models. Apple also plans to introduce a new "Capture Button" with the iPhone 16 Pro models dedicated to the camera app's functionality. The button would be capacitive, meaning the company could offer autofocus controls with the iPhone 16 Pro. However, the iPhone 16 Pro launch is months away, and the final word rests with Apple. The company could change its plans to introduce an upgraded ultra-wide camera, so take the news with a grain of salt.
